(23-25) Commentary on Romans 4:1-12 (Read Romans 4:1-12)

When the world cries out to us to 'take some of this, take some credit, take some bootee you deserve it'. This is why the fulfillment of God’s promise depends entirely on trusting God and his way, and then simply embracing him and what he does. But these are not works for righteousness! Book of Romans: Chapter 3 Part 1 - First the bad news: No one is righteous! He has gone and rescued all of Lot's servants and the king's entire bootee and defeated them all. And he gave him a tithe of all. The One who is our exceedingly great reward. God wants us to be convinced of His truthfulness, and to believe in His ability to keep His promises, and know with certainty that it will come to pass! So Abraham said to Lot 'If you go to the left, I will go to the right. God had to deliver both of them from this situation. A distinction is made between seed and seeds. Justification is not a pardon. This is faith - faith in the promise of God, faith in the ability of God, and faith in the very essence of who God is! (16) So he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people. 2. He Himself is the great reward.

But the story we’re given is a God-story, not an Abraham-story. Laws and rules are unnecessary! There were two main people in the Jewish faith, one was Abraham and one was David and Paul is going to use both of these men as examples of what it means to be declared righteous. What did you get out of it? The King of Sodom is saying 'I want you to take part in the gains of Sodom', and Melchizedek is like the voice of wisdom that cries out where the paths meet. They had worked for their righteousness, and therefore thought they deserved it! We all agree, don’t we, that it was by embracing what God did for him that Abraham was declared fit before God? Abram had to learn that God did not need his help in bringing about His promise - a lesson we too have to learn.

You shouldn't have any trouble understanding this, friends, for you know all the ins and outs of the law - how it works and how its power touches only the living. "Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered! Copyright © 1993, 2002, 2018 by Eugene H. Peterson, The Message (MSG). (4) And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, "This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir." In this citation the singular number is changed into the plural, to take in all sorts of men, Jews and Gentiles, and very agreeably to the sense of the original; for the word אשרי may be rendered "blessed are they", or, "O the blessednesses"; that is, of everyone of them, whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered: such whom God justifies by imputing the righteousness of his Son to them, he removes their iniquities from them, which is meant by their being "forgiven", and that "as far as the east is from the west", Psalm 103:12; he casts them behind his back, Isaiah 38:17, and into the depths of the sea, Micah 7:19, so that they shall never be found more: such whom he clothes with the robe of righteousness, and garments of salvation, Isaiah 61:10, "their sins are covered"; from the eye of divine justice, and shall never be seen more, or be brought against them to their condemnation, and therefore must be happy persons. (2) She takes her stand on the top of the high hill, Beside the way, where the paths meet. So, since we're out from under the old tyranny, does that mean we can live any old way we want? (Rom 4:17-18) The life-giving power of the God Abraham believed in. When everything was hopeless, Abraham believed anyway, deciding to live not on the basis of what he saw he, do. "For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law (natural seed), but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham (uncircumcised Gentiles), who is the father of us all." Yet the seen realm was produced by the unseen - therefore the unseen is greater and more powerful! Sin, worldly living and God's judgment because of the perverse way people were living. The same thing gets said about us when we embrace and believe the One who brought Jesus to life when the conditions were equally hopeless. But the story we're given is a God-story, not an Abraham-story. (8) All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; Nothing crooked or perverse is in them. Abraham is also, of course, father of those who have undergone the religious rite of circumcision not just because of the ritual but because they were willing to live in the risky faith-embrace of God's action for them, the way Abraham lived long before he was marked by circumcision. He plunged into the promise and came up strong, ready for God. A thousand times no, for that would not be just! God's grace tells us that He is concerned about us! If you're a hard worker and do a good job, you deserve your pay; we don't call your wages a gift. In Romans chapter 4 Paul is giving us examples of 'justification by faith' and he draws upon the Jewish believers. 12 And it means further that Abraham is father of all people who embrace what God does for them while they are still on the “outs” with God, as yet unidentified as God’s, in an “uncircumcised” condition. It was because his knees were knocking. The king of Sodom comes out and offers you all that the world has got because of a victory that you have just had in God, at the meeting of the paths there is always the word of wisdom.
